2/23 Updates from the Center for Urban Connections

Hi All!

Our center is going to be updating all of our readers weekly about what events are going on and what are staff is up to that week.

Today, February the 23rd, there is a orientation for all faculty and staff for U-Can Serve. Its from 3:45 until 5:00pm in the Baeressen Ballroom. Please come and learn about the U-Can Serve program and how it can help all faculty and staff at Metro be debt-free and pay off loans!

No spring break plans? The Center for Urban Connections is hosting a Alternative Spring Break. Its wonderful way to make a postive impact in your local community. This year we are going to the Africa Community Center to volunteer and connect with the local community. The African Community Center provides programs and services to assist new residents to the country so that they canbecome productive members of their new American communities. They also provide awareness to refugee and immigrant issues for the public. If you would like more information about this awesome event please contact Alex Basse @ abasse@mscd.edu or come into the Urban Center at Tivoli 243!

There is a upcoming volunteer oppurtunity on campus Saturday,March 13th where volunteers will be working with DPS ( Denver Public Schools) to tour the campus. We need 30 volunteers. If you are interested, please contact Dag in our very own, Urban Center, Tivoli 243.

Please feel free to stop by and ask questions. We can help you with places aroud the Denver area and contacts with the local non-profit community.

New Updates for the Center for Urban Connections

Hi All-
We want to give our readers an update on what we are up to & what events are coming up this spring!

What makes our office unique is that we are the connection between Metro ( your school) and the Denver community around you. There is a lot of invlovement going on with many of the students at Metro.
This is a message from one of our Student Leadership board members Shawn: Hey SLB Members, For those of you who are not aware , Shawn and others are coordinating the initial construction of an Auraria Composting Program. Your input on this project is officially requested! An intial framework is already avaliable - just contact Shawn at aurariacomposting@gmail.com for more info. Our first meeting ( involving other campus clubs and interested student/faculty) is scheduled for Wed. 2/24 at 1pm in the Center for Urban Connections boardroom. Bring anyone who may be interested.

Do you have any veterans in your family? Are you interested in volunteering to help those who have done service to our country? Our very own Student worker, Lavanda Conner is the Executive Director of The 180 House Inc. They provide preventative and supportive care program for veterans and the community. They focus programs on doing: thereputic groups, job readiness, entreprenuership classes, connections to benefits, basic computer training and housing assistance. The 180 House always looks for volunteers and support with programs. For more information please call (720) 744-6694.

In other news, the Center for Urban Connections is showing a documentry, Rebels Remembered with the director, Dick Alweis coming up soon.In honor of Black History Month, our Center wants to present this movie to show the Civil Rights Movement.Please look at our blog for more updates as to when & where this event will be!
